It is an open secret that, following the end of World War II, many Nazis were able to flee to Argentina with the help of the Red Cross, the Vatican, and the then Argentinian president, Peron. Yet few people know what a comfortable life these men are living in Argentina still, free from any outside disturbance or investigation into their past. One of those men is Mr. F.
What happens when a young German meets one of these men? Someone who is trapped in a time capsule from 1945, and a young woman who is from today's Germany which is a completely different country? The documentary OPEN SECRET tells the story of such an encounter, its consequences, and the questions it poses.
Mr F. was a Waffen SS officer in the 16th Panzergrenadier Division, a division that is responsible for two of the most brutal massacres in Italy. In 1947 he succeeded in fleeing to Argentina, where he still lives an undisturbed, comfortable life. At the beginning of this year, ten of his fellow former SS officers were sentenced to life in prison. However the German Ministry of Justice refuses to extradite them: they are already too old.
